Person identification data (PID)
PID is the eIDAS 2 identity set (name, birth date, birth place, nationality) for the EUDI Wallet - which attributes are mandatory and who issues them.
PID (Person Identification Data) is the identity data set defined under eIDAS 2 for EU digital identity. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2977 sets a mandatory minimum: family name, given name, date of birth, place of birth and nationality, together with the issuing authority, issuing country and expiry date of the data itself. A personal administrative number sits in the annex's optional table, not the mandatory one, as do a portrait and the residence attributes. Under the eIDAS Regulation, the definition also extends to legal persons and representation, though most attention focuses on natural persons' EUDI Wallet issuance. It is the wallet's core credential, issued at assurance level high after identity verification by a PID Provider designated or authorised by a member state. Member states must mutually recognise each other's issued PID, which is what makes the wallet usable across borders. Article 5a(1) gives member states 24 months from the entry into force of the implementing acts to provide at least one wallet, so the date follows those acts rather than a fixed calendar year; under Article 5a(13) issuance, use and revocation are free of charge to natural persons.
PID is distinct from attestations of attributes: PID states who you are; attestations state things about you. Presenting PID does not expose every attribute at once - selective disclosure lets the holder share only what a relying party actually needs. The implementing regulations prescribe PID formats (mdoc, SD-JWT VC) and the rubric for issuance, positioning PID as the electronic attestation of identity foreseen by eIDAS 2.
