Electronic identification (eID)
Electronic identification is using an electronic means to prove who you are online. An eID scheme is the whole arrangement of means, issuance and assurance levels. eIDAS defines three assurance levels - low, substantial and high - based on how identity was verified and how the means is protected.
Under eIDAS, notified national schemes are recognised across borders (in the Netherlands: DigiD and eHerkenning, regulated nationally by the Wdo). Private means also exist; the Cleverbase app (formerly Vidua) is a private high-assurance identity app. The EUDI Wallet will become the common European eID vehicle.
